The Compromise of 1850 dealt with the Union splitting up. The south threatened to separate from the North because they didn‘t agree with the proposed compromise. There were five things that the Compromise would state. California was to be admitted into the Union as a free state. Texas would have to give up some of the land that they both claimed with New Mexico and Texas would be paid 10,000,000 for it. The slave trade but not slavery would be abolished in the District of Columbia. When New Mexico and Utah asked for statehood, they could choose whether to be free or a slave state, and a new fugitive slave law made it a crime for any slave to run away.
