In some cases, slave owners disagreed with slavery. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were both opposed to slavery but owned slaves themselves. In fact, in the first draft of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote, “a cruel war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred right of life and liberty” It was taken out however and not displayed in the actually Declaration of Independence. What was written though was, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
