The first Africans to come to the colonies came on a Dutch ship, which landed in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. The Dutch traded the 20 Africans for food and rations. They wer taken as indentured servants because they susupected by their names that htey had been baptized as Christians as the Spanish were. Most indentured servents had a contract to work without wages for a master for four to seven years. If an African was brought in as a slave, they had no chance of becoming free. Once black indentured servents were freed they would bon on the lowest level of the colonial society because of racial prejudice.
