Many slaves had to work their whole lives after the age of six. There was a boy named Olaudah Equiano who traveled threw the Middle Passage. While on the ship he refused to eat hoping that he would die. Unfortunately, he was among the people who survived the long ship ride. The main job for many slaves in the South was to grow the cash crops to maintain their master’s quality of life.
