Seven out of every eight African slaves worked on a plantation. Most worked in the fields doing various jobs such as cotton work, tobacco, rice and sugarcane. The skilled slaves got to do other jobs such as carpentry, blacksmiths, or mechanics. Other slaves worked as butlers, maids, or nursemaids. Some slaves found time to be preachers, nurses, or midwives.
