Usually when a slave went to escape they would leave during the dark of night and would hide during the day.  Most of them traveled alone while still in the Southern portion of the United States. A lot of people used the North Star to help them at night so they wouldn’t lose track of which direction they were heading.  Abolitionists would get a fugitive through a city by using a funeral procession or piling produce over them in a farm wagon.
