A slave was not required to work on Saturday afternoons or on Sunday unless circumstances arose like the right stage of the rice and sugar cultivation. During these times they were required to work 16-18 hour days for seven days a week. If it was necessary, slave owners could work them to their maximum at all times. Each week a slave would get a ration of eight dry quarts (one peck) of corn, three or four pounds of bacon or salt pork, and maybe some yams or molasses. Some places allowed slaves to grow their own garden, which is where they would get their vegetables.
