Slaves did one of three basic classifications of work: domestic, mechanical and agricultural. Domestic slaves would do things such as work around the slave owner’s home, cooking, cleaning and raising the white children. The mechanically inclined slaves would do things such as carpentry, millwrights, masons, tailors and shoemakers. The ones who succeeded the best in the agricultural area were called field hands. They were considered more ' and usually got better food, clothing and shelter.The New Book of Knowledge
