The Underground Railroad was “a secret network of refuge stations in the United States operated by Northern abolitionists-both black and white-to help runaway slaves escape from the North.” In a length of 40 years an estimated 40,000 slaves made it North to freedom. Most of them fled to Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio because of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Many more thousands sought freedom in Canada.  Some also fled to the Caribbean and Mexico. Mexico was announced a free country in 1829.
